The historic clock tower in Antalya has regained its dome after 90 years

The dome of the historic clock tower, built in the early twentieth century on one of the most important symbols of Antalya, on the bastions of the Byzantine era, was destroyed in a storm in the 1930s in its original structure, replaced after 90. years with 5 hours of work. Under the 4.5-ton dome were the remaining bells and 40-kilogram lead weights of the historic clock whose mechanism was stolen.

A project to restore the clock tower, built in the early 20th century on a pentagonal fortress built in the Byzantine era in the 2nd century, has been prepared at Kale Gate, known as the main gate of historic Kaleiçi. After the tower restoration project, which has not been touched for decades and was in ruins, it was approved by the Antalya Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board. The restoration work, which began in mid-February, is due to be completed by December 10. It was announced that the value of the restoration contract was 1,229,546 Turkish liras.

The tower restoration project, which is owned by the Regional Directorate of Enterprises, is being carried out by the Antalya Government Investment Control and Coordination Department (YIKOB).

During the restoration, it was decided that the historical clock and its mechanism, which the German Emperor Kaiser Wilhelm presented as a gift at the beginning of the 19th century, were lost and replaced with plastic. In the tower, instead of the dome that fell due to a storm in the 1930s, all the imitation lattices that were built in the 1960s have been removed.

The bell and the dome were placed over the 20.3-meter-high tower by a crane. The tower turned into a domed structure again 90 years later.

The inauguration will be headed by Governor Ersin Yazici in the coming days.
