The Turkish passport

Turkish passports are issued under Passport Law No. 5682 as of July 15, 1950 for Turkish citizens to travel abroad. Nationals of the de facto country of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are also eligible to apply for a Turkish passport.
Passports issued since June 1, 2010, are biometric and valid for up to 10 years. The Turkish passport is ranked in the Henley & Partners Passport Index, ranking 49th in 2022. It allows you to enter 110 countries without a visa.

Types of Turkish passports

Ordinary passports

After 2010 in the name of Maronite passports. It is issued to Turkish citizens who are not eligible for any of the following types of passports.

Special passport

It is also referred to as a green passport which allows its holder to travel without a visa to most European countries, about 67 countries, including for example Ivory Coast, the Philippines and others. Unlike an ordinary passport, it is exempt from the passport fee and only subject to the brochure fee (225 Turkish Liras (€15) as of 2022). Issued to:

  • Former National Assembly Members
  • First, second, or third class public servants.
  • Retired public servants of the first, second, or third class.
  • Non-Metropolitan Mayors
  • Academics with at least 15 years of experience
  • Husband/wife of special passport holders
  • Unmarried and unemployed children of special passport holders who live with their parents until they reach the age of 25.

Service passport

Also referred to as the gray passport. Issued to:

  • Persons who are not eligible for special or diplomatic passports are designated to travel abroad for relevant official and/or government purposes.
  • National athletes
  • Turkish citizens who work in international organizations of which Turkey is a member
  • Turkish Red Crescent staff
  • Turkish Aviation Association employees
  • Husband/wife of service passport holders
  • Unmarried and unemployed children of service passport holders who live with their parents, until they reach the age of 25.

Diplomatic passport

After 2010 it is also referred to as Black Passport. Issued to:

  • Current and former members of the National Assembly, ministers and vice presidents
  • Members of the Constitutional Court and the chief judges and deputies of other judicial organs
  • The Chief of the Turkish General Staff, his deputies, four-star generals and admirals
  • Previous Presidents, Prime Ministers and Speakers
  • Provincial governors and mayors
  • Diplomats
  • Negotiators who will deal with international issues
  • Husband/wife of diplomatic passport holders. However, this passport can only be used when accompanying the primary passport holder.
  • Unmarried and unemployed children under the age of 18 holders of diplomatic passports who live with their parents. However, this passport can only be used when accompanying the primary passport holder.
